lyrics

Lord bid your servant go in peace
Your word is now fulfilled
These eyes have seen salvation’s dawn,
This child so long foretold

This is the Savior of the world,
The Gentiles promised light
God’s glory dwelling in our midst,
The joy of Israel

Behold this child will pierce your heart
His Word will be a sword
A sign opposed to hearts concealed
And grace for heaven’s adored

Almighty Father, hear our cry
Through Christ the only Son,
Whom in the Spirit we adore
For ages without end

The Song of Simeon, or “Nunc Dimittis” as it is known from the Latin has been sung by the church for over 1500 years. It is one of
the famous infancy canticles. Paul Westermeyer in his “Te Deum” says that it has been used in the daily prayer of the church since
the 4th century. During the Reformation Calvin’s church sang this during communion, but today you’d be hard pressed to find many
churches singing it. In this scene Luke shows us a devout Jew named Simeon, who upon seeing the young Jesus in the temple is filled
with the Holy Spirit and breaks out in spontaneous praise…yet it’s a tempered praise already registering both the covenant blessings
AND curses that Jesus would bring. The prayer is rooted deeply, like all the infancy songs in the words of the Old Testament,
prophecies woven together from pieces of 2ndIsaiah (40:5; 42:6; 46:13; 52:10). Pairing a Shape-Note tune (CONSOLATION)
from the Southern Harmony with this humble scene seemed fitting and I’ve grown to love this connection.
