Spirit You All "The distinctive and powerful tradition of shape note singing has seen something of a revival over the last decade or so - there are an increasing number of "sings" happening, but traces have shown up in a lot of other music, too... The songs' folk arrangements have a varying fidelity to the a cappella originals, but they're united by a stripped-down sensibility that's appropriate to the Lenten season." Favorite track: IDUMEA (And am I born to die?).

1.
What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul What wondrous love is this, O my soul What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss To bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul, To bear the dreadful curse for my soul When I was sinking down, sinking down, sinking down, When I was sinking down, sinking down, When I was sinking down beneath God’s righteous frown, Christ laid aside His crown for my soul, for my soul, Christ laid aside His crown for my soul To God and to the Lamb, I will sing, I will sing; To God and to the Lamb, I will sing To God and to the Lamb who is the great "I Am"; While millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing; While millions join the theme, I will sing And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on; And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing and joyful be; And through eternity, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on; And through eternity, I’ll sing on
2.
Love divine, all love excelling, Joy of heav’n to earth come down; Fix in us Thy humble dwelling, All Thy faithful mercies crown! Jesus, Thou art all compassion, Pure, unbounded love Thou art; Visit us with Thy Salvation; Enter ev’ry trembling heart.
3.
Oh when shall I see Jesus, And reign with Him above, And shall hear the trumpet sound in the morning? And from the flowing fountain Drink everlasting love, And shall hear the trumpet sound in the morning? Chorus: Shout, Oh glory! for I shall mount above the skies, When I hear the trumpet sound in the morning. When shall I be delivered From this vain world of sin, And shall hear the trumpet sound in the morning? And with my blessed Jesus, Drink endless pleasures in, And shall hear the trumpet sound in the morning? (Chorus) But now I am a soldier, My Captain’s gone before; He’s given me my orders, And bids me ne’er give o’er; His promises are faithful — A righteous crown He’ll give, And all His valiant soldiers Eternally shall live. Through grace I feel determined To conquer, though I die, And then away to Jesus On wings of love I’ll fly; Farewell to sin and sorrow, I bid them both adieu! And, Oh my friends, prove faithful, And on your way pursue. Whene’er you meet with troubles, And trials on your way, Then cast your care on Jesus, And don’t forget to pray. Gird on the gospel armor Of faith, and hope, and love, And when the combat’s ended, He’ll carry you above. Oh do not be discouraged, For Jesus is your Friend; And if you lack for knowledge, He’ll not refuse to lend. Neither will He upbraid you, Though often you request, He’ll give you grace to conquer, And take you home to rest.
4.
And am I born to die? To lay this body down! And must my trembling spirit fly Into a world unknown? A land of deepest shade, Unpierced by human thought; The dreary regions of the dead, Where all things are forgot! Soon as from earth I go, What will become of me? Eternal happiness or woe Must then my portion be! Waked by the trumpet sound, I from my grave shall rise; And see the Judge with glory crowned, And see the flaming skies!
5.
146 Hallelujah And let this feeble body fail, And let it faint or die; My soul shall quit this mournful vale, And soar to worlds on high, Chorus: And I’ll sing hallelujah, And you’ll sing hallelujah, And we’ll all sing hallelujah, When we arrive at home. Shall join the disembodied saints, And find its long-sought rest, The only bliss for which it pants, In my Redeemer’s breast. (Chorus) Oh what are all my suff’rings here, If, Lord, Thou count me meet With that enraptured host t’appear, And worship at Thy feet! (Chorus) Give joy or grief, give ease or pain, Take life or friends away, But let me find them all again, In that eternal day. (Chorus)
6.
Come, Holy Spirit come, With energy divine, And on this poor, benighted soul, With beams of mercy shine. Melt, melt this frozen heart; This stubborn will subdue; Each evil passion overcome, And form me all anew. Mine will the profit be, But Thine shall be the praise; And unto Thee will I devote The remnant of my days.
7.
Flee as a bird to your mountain Thou who art weary of sin Go to the clear, flowing fountain Where you may wash and be clean Fly, for th'avenger is near thee Call, and the Savior will hear thee He on His bosom will bear thee Thou who art weary of sin O thou who art weary of sin He is the bountiful Giver Now unto Him draw near Peace then shall flow like a river Thou shalt be saved from they fear Haste, then, the hours are flying Spend not the moments in sighing Cease from your sorrow and crying The Savior will wipe every tear The Savior will wipe every teaf Come, then, to Jesus, thy Savior He will redeem thee from sin Blest with a sense of His favor Make thee all-glorious within Call, for the Savior is near thee Waiting in mercy to hear thee He by His presence will cheer thee O thou who art weary of sin O thou who art weary of sin
8.
And must I be to judgment brought, And answer in that day For ev’ry vain and idle thought And ev’ry word I say? Chorus: We are passing away, To that great judgment day. Yes ev’ry secret of my heart Shall shortly be made known; And I receive my just desert For all that I have done. (Chorus) How careful, then, ought I to be; With what religious fear, Who such a strict account must give For my behavior here. (Chorus)
9.
God is my strong salvation, What foe have I to fear? In darkness and temptation, My light, my help is near: Though hosts encamp around me, Firm to the fight I stand: What terror can confound me, With God at my right hand? Place on the Lord reliance, My soul, with courage wait; His truth be thine affiance, When faint and desolate: His might thine heart shall strengthen, His love thy joy increase; Mercy thy days shall lengthen, "The Lord will give thee peace." In heavenly love abiding, no change my heart shall fear; and safe is such confiding, for nothing changes here: the storm may roar without me, my heart may low be laid; but God is round about me, and can I be dismayed? Wherever he may guide me, no want shall turn me back; my Shepherd is beside me, and nothing can I lack: his wisdom ever waketh, his sight is never dim, he knows the way he taketh, and I will walk with him. Sacred Poems and Hymns, 1854
10.
I know that my Redeemer lives, Glory, Hallelujah! What comfort this sweet sentence gives, Glory, Hallelujah! Chorus: Shout on, pray on, we’re gaining ground, Glory Hallelujah! The dead’s alive, and the lost is found, Glory Hallelujah! He lives to bless me with His love; Glory Hallelujah! He lives to plead my cause above; Glory Hallelujah! (Chorus) He lives to crush the fiends of hell; Glory Hallelujah! He lives and doth within me dwell; Glory Hallelujah! (Chorus)
11.
Farewell, vain world, I’m going home To play on the Golden Harp. My Savior smiles and bids me come To play on the Golden Harp. Chorus: I want to be where Jesus is, To play on the Golden Harp. Sweet angels beckon me away To play on the Golden Harp. To sing God’s praise in endless day To play on the Golden Harp. (Chorus)
12.
1 Praise the Savior, now and ever; praise him, all beneath the skies; self denying, suffering, dying, on the cross a sacrifice. Victory gaining, life obtaining, now in glory he doth rise! 2 Our work faileth, Christ's availeth; he is all our righteousness. He, our Savior, has forever set us free from dire distress. Through his merit we inherit light and peace and happiness. 3 Sin's bonds severed, we're delivered; Christ has crushed the serpent's head. Death no longer is the stronger; hell itself is captive led. Christ has risen from death's prison; o'er the tomb he light has shed. 4 For his favor, praise forever unto God the Father sing. Praise the Savior, praise him ever, Son of God, our Lord and King. Praise the Spirit; through Christ's merit he doth us salvation bring.
13.
Verse 1: Come, ye sinners, poor and needy Weak and wounded, sick and sore Jesus ready stands to save you Full of pity, love and power Verse 2: Come, ye thirsty, come, and welcome, God’s free bounty glorify; True belief and true repentance, Every grace that brings you nigh. Chorus: I will arise and go to Jesus, He will embrace me in His arms; In the arms of my dear Savior, O there are ten thousand charms. Verse 3: Come, ye weary, heavy laden, Lost and ruined by the fall; If you tarry till you’re better, You will never come at all. Verse 4: Lo! th’incarnate God ascended, Pleads the merit of His blood: Venture on Him, venture wholly, Let no other trust intrude.
14.
Glorious things of Thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God! He whose word can ne’er be broken, Formed thee for His own abode. Chorus: On the Rock of Ages founded, Who can shake thy sure repose? With salvation’s walls surrounded, Thou mayst smile at all thy foes. ’Round her habitation hov’ring, See the cloud and fire appear, For a glory and a cov’ring, Showing that the Lord is near. (Chorus)
15.
16.
1. My Shepherd will supply my need: Jehovah is His Name; In pastures fresh He makes me feed, Beside the living stream. He brings my wandering spirit back When I forsake His ways, And leads me, for His mercy’s sake, In paths of truth and grace. 2. When I walk through the shades of death Thy presence is my stay; A word of Thy supporting breath Drives all my fears away. Thy hand, in sight of all my foes, Doth still my table spread; My cup with blessings overflows, Thine oil anoints my head. 3. The sure provisions of my God Attend me all my days; O may Thy house be my abode, And all my work be praise. There would I find a settled rest, While others go and come; No more a stranger, nor a guest, But like a child at home.
17.
Now shall my inward joys arise, And burst into a song; Almighty love inspires my heart, And pleasure tunes my tongue. God, on His thirsty Zion’s hill, Some mercy drops has thrown; And solemn oaths have bound His love To show’r salvation down. Why do we then indulge our fears, Suspicions and complaints? Is He a God, and shall His grace Grow weary of His saints?
18.
Do not I love Thee, Oh my Lord? Behold my heart, and see, And turn each cursed idol out, That dares to rival Thee. Do not I love Thee from my soul? Then let me nothing love; Dead be my heart to ev’ry joy When Jesus cannot move. Thou know’st I love Thee, dearest Lord, But Oh I long to soar Far from the sphere of mortal joys, And learn to love Thee more.
19.
He dies! The friend of sinners dies! And He died on the cross for sinners, Lo! Salem’s daughters weep around! And He died on the cross for sinners.
20.
Jesus, my all to heav’n is gone, Glory Hallelujah; He whom I fix my hopes upon! Glory Hallelujah! Chorus: I want a seat in Paradise, Glory Hallelujah! I love that union never dies, Glory Hallelujah! His track I see and I’ll pursue, Glory Hallelujah; The narrow way till Him I view, Glory Hallelujah! (Chorus) Lo! glad I come and Thou, dear Lamb, Glory Hallelujah; Shalt take me to Thee as I am, Glory, Hallelujah! (Chorus)
21.
1 Blest is the man, forever blest, Whose guilt is pardoned by his God, Whose sins with sorrow are confessed And covered with his Savior's blood. 2 Blest is the man to whom the Lord Imputes not his iniquities; He pleads no merit of reward And not on works but grace relies. 3 From guile his heart and lips are free; His humble joy, his holy fear, With deep repentance well agree And join to prove his faith sincere. 4 How glorious is that righteousness That hides and cancels all his sins, While bright the evidence of grace Thro' all his life appears and shines!
22.
Psalm 142 To God I made my sorrows known, From God I sought relief; In long complaints before his throne I poured out all my grief. Then did I raise a louder cry, And called thy mercy near,- "Thou art my portion when I die; Be thou my refuge here."

about

THANK YOU FOR HELPING US TO SUPPOR THE FLINT WATER CRISIS. WE RAISED OVER $1,000 VIA THIS COMPILATION IN 2016.
-
Hollow Square Hymnal - I grew up singing shapenote hymns with my family and I've always loved the rustic strength of the tunes. For a few years I've been collecting arrangements from various friends who've recorded traditional shape note tunes (some knowingly and some unaware). This compilation collects some of the more popular tunes and texts as an introduction to this rich repertoire of sacred music that has experienced a renaissance in recent years. This compilation is different for us in that this is NOT a retuned hymn album but (mostly) a collection of arrangements.

To learn more check out the recent documentary/record produced by Erica and Matt Hinton - www.awakemysoul.com

Thanks to all of the artists for boldly engaging this compilation with some of the more imaginative arrangements i have heard of traditional hymnody.
