Raise your voice
see the triumph that’s arrived from the grave
We are risen to new life
praise God who gives us peace
in Christ we are made free

Who turns our dying into life
From the valley we are lifted up
Unto him who turns darkness into light
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

All the deeds that he has done
He has made
Each of us a child of God
Praise him who sets us free

From the valley we are lifted up
Unto him who turns darkness into light

1 Jesus lives! no longer now
can thy terrors, Death, appall me;
Jesus lives! by this I know
from the grave he will recall me;
brighter scenes at death commence;
this shall be my confidence—
this shall be my confidence
2 Jesus lives! to him the Throne
high o'er heaven and earth is given;
I may go where he is gone,
live and reign with him in heaven:
God through Christ forgives offense;
this shall be my confidence—
his shall be my confidence
Jesus lives! — for me he died;
hence will I, to Jesus living,
pure in heart — and act abide,
praise to him and glory giving
praise to him and glory giving
4 Jesus lives! my heart knows well
nought from me his Love shall sever;
life, nor death, nor powers of hell,
part me now from Christ for ever:
God will be a sure Defense;
this shall be my confidence—
his shall be my confidence
Jesus lives! — transformed is death
to a gate of life immortal;
this shall calm — my trembling breath,
when I pass its gloomy portal:
Jesus lives! — transformed is death
o a gate — of life immortal;
this shall calm — my trembling breath,
when I pass — its gloomy portal:
when I pass — its gloomy portal:
faith shall cry, as fails each sense,
Lord, thou art my Confidence
Lord, thou art my Confidence

Still thy sorrow, Magdalena!
Wipe the teardrops from thine eyes:
Not at Simon's board thou kneelest,
Pouring thy repentant sighs :
All with thy glad heart rejoices;
All things sing, with happy voices,
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Laugh with rapture, Magdalena!
Be thy drooping forehead bright:
Banished now is every anguish,
Breaks anew thy morning light:
Christ from death the world hath freed;
He is risen, is risen indeed:
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Joy! exult, O Magdalena!
He hath burst the rocky prison:
Ended are the days of darkness:
Conqueror hath He arisen.
Mourn no more the Christ departed;
Run to welcome Him, glad-hearted:
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Lift thine eyes, O Magdalena!
See! thy living Master stands;
See His face, as ever, smiling;
See those wounds upon His hands,
On His feet, His sacred side,—
Gems that deck the Glorified:
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Live, now live, O Magdalena!

Verse 1
Gratefully our hearts adore Him,
As His light once more appears,
Bowing down in joy before Him,
Rising up from grief and tears.
Chorus:
Christ is risen! Alleluia!
Risen our victorious Head!
Sing his praises! Alleluia!
Christ is risen from the dead!
He is risen from the dead!
Verse 2
Christ is risen ! all the sorrow
That last evening round Him lay
Now has found a glorious morrow
In the rising of today
Bridge 1
And the grave its first-fruits gives,
Springing up from holy ground
He was dead, but now He lives
He was lost, but He is found.
Christ is risen! Alleluia!
He was lost, but He is found.
Bridge 2
Christ is risen and I'll never
Death or hell shall us inthrall
Be we Christ's, in Him forever
We have triumphed over all
All the doubting and dejection
Of our trembling hearts have ceased
It's His day of resurrection
Let us rise, and keep the feast.
Chorus

1 Mary to her Savior's tomb
hasted at the early dawn:
spice she brought, and sweet perfume;
but the Lord she loved was gone
For a while she weeping stood,
Struck with horror and surprise;
shedding tears, a plenteous flood,
for her heart supplied her eyes
2 Grief and sighing quickly fled
when she heard His welcome voice:
Just before, she thought Him dead;
Now He bids her heart rejoice
What a change His word can make,
Turning darkness into day!
You who weep for Jesus' sake,
He will wipe your tears away
3 He who came to comfort her
when she thought her all was lost
will for your relief appear,
though you now are tempest-tossed
On His word your burden cast,
On His love your thoughts employ:
Weeping for a while may last;
but the morning brings the joy

Christ, upon the Friday slain,
When three days were past again,
Rose victorious,
And, triumphant o'er the Tomb,
Lifts his loved ones out of gloom,
Makes them glorious.
For the people of his Name,
he, upon the cross of shame, Dead was lying :
In the grave a while he lay,
Then, at dawning of the day, Rose undying.
In his passion and his cross,
With a bulwark sure from loss We are gifted :
By his resurrection bright,
From the grave of sin and night We are lifted.
Offered up for sinners,
Christ As their sacrifice sufficed Unrepeated:
By the precious blood he spilt,
Jesus washed our souls from guilt, Hell defeated.
Once He lay within the grave,
Lest the race he came to save
Twice should perish:
Now he opens Heaven wide,
Comes to every mourner's side, — Comes to cherish.
He the Lion, strong in fight,
Rising up to-day, his might Forth is telling;
With the arms of righteousness,
Satan, Prince of wickedness, Ever quelling.
Now is come the Lord's own day,
Whereon he hath washed away Earth's pollution;
Whereon death was slain in strife,
And the foe hath made of life Restitution.
So, from hearts made pure from stain,
Now the Alleluia strain Doubly pealeth:
Now all evil hath its close,
And the life which Heaven knows God revealeth.
In the world's late eventide,
Raise thou up thy servants tried, Jesus Holy :
May this glad and festal day
thy salvation bring for aye To the lowly!

1 Come, you faithful, raise the strain
of triumphant glad–ness!
God has brought his Israel
into joy from sadness,
loosed from Pharaoh's bitter yoke
Jacob's sons and daughters,
led them with unmoistened foot
through the Red Sea waters.
2 ‘Tis the spring of souls today;
Christ has burst his prison,
and from three days' sleep in death
as a sun hath risen;
all the winter of our sins,
long and dark, is flying
from his light, to whom we give
laud and praise undying.
3 Now the queen of seasons, bright
with the day of splendor,
with the royal feast of aright,
comes its joy to render;
Comes to glad Jerusalem
who with true affection
welcome in unwearied strains
Jesus' resurrection!
4 Neither might the gates of earth,
nor the tomb’s dark portal,
nor the watchers, nor the seal,
hold Thee as a mortal;
but today amidst the twelve
Thou didst stand bestowing
that Thy peace, which evermore
passeth human knowing

v1:
Arise, my soul! Awake from sleep!
Behold thy Savior’s grave!
His loved ones, mourning, laid him deep
In death’s devouring cave.
Chorus 1
But from the tomb He victorious came,
Might that we will do the same
Ever blessed be His name!
v2:
A cheering sound, an angel’s voice,
Proclaimeth from on high.
Our brother, Jesus, oh rejoice,
Could not death’s captive lie.
v3:
O sacred day, sublimest day,
O Mystery unheard!
Death’s hosts, that claimed Him as their prey,
He scattered with a word.
Chorus 2
But from the tomb He victorious came,
Might that we will do the same
Ever blessed be His name!
v4:
The grave is dark, the grave is cold,
And I must slumber there.
But risen, I will Christ behold,
Christ’s glories will I share
v5:
That I a welcome warm may win
From Jesus at the end.
From the foul rot of sin
May I as victorious rise
Chorus 3
But from the tomb He victorious came,
Might that we will do the same
Ever blessed be His name!
v6: I boldly now defy thee, death!
For you have lost your sting.
Defy, O Hell thy blasting breath,
All terrors you can’t bring!
Chorus 4
But from the tomb He victorious came,
Might that we will do the same
Ever blessed be His name!
Chorus 5
But from the tomb He victorious came,
Might that we will do the same
Ever blessed be His name!

For years I've wanted to curate a selection of songs for churches longing to inhabit their EASTERTIDE season with more intentionality. I've been grateful to participate in a stream of evangelical churches exploring and incorporating different elements of the church calendar. And it's been quite curious to me that celebrating a robust Eastertide has been the most challenging. Maybe it's trauma from the Easter Sunday spectacle or maybe it hits awkwardly with the end of school years, or some other cognitive dissonance with the reality that every Sunday is Resurrection Sunday.
Either way, when Bellwether Arts was working on their STATIONS OF THE RESURRECTION project a few years back I was reminded just how little of the Resurrection narratives consistently find themselves in our services -- and thus our scriptural and spiritual imaginations.
These two albums come from a collection of hymns and poetry collected by Frank Foxcraft in 1878. He says himself as part of his introduction regarding Resurrection themed-songs - "No part of the editor’s search has been so disappointing as that which led him among the hymn-books. (Foxcroft included 177 pieces, extending over 15 centuries of sacred song in his collection.)
You'll find 17 songs between the two EP's, with 17 texts the artists chose that foreground the wonder, fear, and glory of the resurrection narratives. All of creation comes alive in these songs in concert with creatures of heaven and earth. And I especially love the songs that meditate on the women's presence at the empty tomb!
Volume 1 is a bit more gentle, more introspective and conversant with the tender movements of beauty and relinquished sorrow.
Volume 2 is more energetic and brash - with electronic impulses and full band arrangements that speak to the power and unbridled joy of the resurrection.
i love them both so much. I hope you will too.
Again - I am grateful for the many artists in this collection who donated their time, talents, and considerable experience to bring this project to life. And a special HT to Jonathan Gabhart for working with a few of my old Hope students on their tracks! So proud!!
Per usual I've invited a friend to write an introductory article which is included in the songbook. So grateful for Rev. Eric Dirksen, pastor of Christ Church Davis, CA for wedding his love of Augustine with the needs of our theme.
He is Risen!
