about

We give this album as a free gift to the church. All donations will be directed to the Van Patter family. You can read more about them here:

The Van Patters– Michael, Hannah, Piper (3), and Watts (1)– live in Greensboro, NC. At the end of May 2013, Watts was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Since then, they've spent nearly 100 days/nights in the hospital (Brenner Children's in Winston Salem, NC) as Watts receives aggressive chemotherapy. Treatment will continue for another 18 months. The weekend that Watts was diagnosed, the Van Patter's started keeping a blog, hoping that it would serve as both a source of updates and a testimony to the goodness of God, even in painful and unexplainable circumstances. Canticles - from the Song of Moses in Exodus 15 to the Song of Moses and the Lamb in Revelation 15 God has given voice to his people's response in poetic praise throughout the story of scripture. He has given poetic song as an embodied way for his people to corporately gather their spirits together and offer praise, thanksgiving, lament, and covenant proclamation. The canticles typically refer to songs in scripture that habitate outside the psalms.

In this latest compilation from Cardiphonia we have invited a group of church musicians and songwriters to meditate on 13 of these scripture songs that have been the most used throughout church history. So few of them find voice in the praises of the evangelical church (it is slightly a different case in the more liturgical traditions) and most of its musicians are largely unaware of their presence. They have so much to teach us about God and worship and we though it was important for the churches musicians to have an opportunity to engage with these songs.

These canticles are a brilliant array of the various ways of writing from scripture. Some of them are word for word renditions, others pursuing something akin to dynamic equivalence, many offer a paraphrase, and a couple provide reflections from this side of the cross.

All in all they will be a huge blessing to the church as we seek to sing God's songs back to Him.

Track Name: Jason Morrell - In the Night (Isaiah 26:9-20)
The Prayer of Isaiah, Isaiah 26:9-20
-
1 ’Twas in the night, when troubles came,
I sought, my God, for thee,
But found no refuge in that name
That once supported me.

2 I sought thee, but I found thee not,
For all was dark within;
Thy tender mercy I forgot
To me when dead in sin.

REFRAIN
My soul longs for you
always in the night, always in the night
My Spirit within me
seeks you in the night,
always in the night, always in the night

3 With cords of his eternal love,
’Twas thus my soul he drew,
And taught my wretched heart to prove
His oath and promise true.

4 At length my Sun’s refulgent beam
Through the dark cloud appeared;
My night of woe was like a dream;
My soul was blessed and cheered.
Track Name: The Gentle Wolves (Richard Kentopp) - Canticle of the Turning (Luke 1:46-55)
1.My soul cries out with a joyful shout
that the God of my heart is great,
And my spirit sings of the wondrous things
that you bring to the ones who wait.

You fixed your sight on your servant's plight,
and my weakness you did not spurn,
So from east to west shall my name be blest.
Could the world be about to turn?

2. Though I am small, my God, my all,
you work great things in me,
And your mercy will last from the depths of the past
to the end of the age to be.

Your very name puts the proud to shame,
and to those who would for you yearn,
You will show your might, put the strong to flight,
for the world is about to turn.

3. From the halls of power to the fortress tower,
not a stone will be left on stone.
Let the king beware for your justice tears
ev'ry tyrant from his throne.

The hungry poor shall weep no more,
for the food they can never earn;
There are tables spread, ev'ry mouth be fed,
for the world is about to turn.

4. Though the nations rage from age to age,
we remember who holds us fast:
God's mercy must deliver us
from the conqueror's crushing grasp.

This saving word that our forebears heard
is the promise which holds us bound,
'Til the spear and rod can be crushed by God,
who is turning the world around.
Track Name: Patrick Schlabs - I Called to God (Jonah 2:2-9)
You cast me out into the deep
And there your floods surround
I sank beneath the raging sea
As billows crashed around

The Psalm of Jonah, Jonah 2:2-9
-
Verse 1:
I was thrown out from your sight
And I was driven away
I know I will see with my eyes
Again your holy place

Chorus:
I called to God in my distress
He has heard my voice
I cried to him out of the depths
He answered my call
He answered my call

Verse 2:
The waters closed in over me
They came to bring me death
I was covered up by the deep
Weeds choked out my breathe
I sank down to
The mountain roots
The earth had locked me in
Just as the grave sealed up its gates
You saved me from the pit

Verse 3:
As my life fainted away
I remembered you my God
All those who hope in idols vain
Forsake their hope of love

Chorus 2:
With my voice I will give thanks
A sacrifice to you
What I have vowed I now will pay
Salvation comes from you
Salvation comes from you
Salvation comes from you
Track Name: Stephen Wozny - Zion (Isaiah 12:1-6)
The 1st Song of Isaiah, Isaiah 12:1-6
-
VERSE 1
You will say on that day:
I will give thanks to the Lord,
Though you were angry with me,
Your anger turned away,
and you comforted me

CHORUS
So give thanks to the Lord, and call on His name,
Shout, and sing for joy, all you daughters of Zion,
He is with you now, the Son of God
He is with you now, the Son of God

VERSE 2
Behold, my God is salvation; I will not be afraid;
The Lord, my God, is my song; I will sing of all He’s done,
and make everything known

I will sing His name! I will sing His name!
I will sing His name for all the world and everyone!

I will sing His name for all the world and everyone!

Track Name: Wendell Kimbrough - Dawning Light of Our Salvation (Luke 1:68-79)
The Song of Zechariah, Luke 1:68-79
-
1. Long in darkness Israel wandered;
Long in mortal shadows, we
Walked in bondage and self-pity,
Trod in paths of sin and grief.
In the prophets’ words He told us,
Long the God of Israel spoke;
He alone in strength would save us
From the hands of all our foes.

2. He shall raise a mighty Savior;
Born of David’s lineage, He
Comes in cov’nant love to claim us
From our sins to set us free.
Light to those who dwell in darkness
Life to those from death who flee
Joy unto the earth, and gladness,
To your pathways dawning peace!

CHORUS:
Every valley be exalted!
Every mountain be made plane!
Crooked ways repent and straighten;
All creation bend in praise!

3. Jesus, Lord, and mighty Savior,
David’s Son and yet his King,
Dawning light of our salvation,
Of your saving pow’r we sing!
Stand, O lame, and dance ye broken,
Know the Savior’s healing grace;
Come, O deaf and hear him singing;
Turn, O blind, behold his face!

You send your servant forth in peace,
According to your word.
For my eyes—my eyes have seen
The salvation of the Lord.

My eyes have seen your salvation,
Which you have prepared
In the presence of all people.

My eyes have seen your salvation,
A light for revelation
To all people, for Israel's glory.
Track Name: Naaman Wood - For You Alone (Revelation 15:3-4)

Your works oh God are marvelous,
Your ways are just and true.
Almighty is the LORD our God,
The King of every age.

REFRAIN:
For you alone, for you alone, for you alone, for you alone are ho-ly.

VERSE 2:
When all the realms upon the earth
Behold your work complete,
Who will not fear and tremble, Lord
And glorify your name?

REFRAIN

VERSE 3:
And every land will come to you
To worship you alone,
Because your acts of righteousness
Have been to all revealed.

REFRAIN
Track Name: Doug O'Donnell and Paul Van der Bijl - My Strength, My Song, My Salvation (Ex.15:1-18)
The Song of Moses, Exodus 15
-
I sing unto the Lord for he has triumphed gloriously,
The horse, the rider, he has thrown into the blood red sea.

My strength, my song, my salvation, this is my God "the Lord."
I will exalt him, praise him till his name be all adored.

Our enemies went down unto the depths just like a stone.
But you, O God, have raised us up unto thy mountain throne.

They tremble (all the nations do). They melt before his fame.
But we with one voice shout a loud, "Our Lord will ever reign."

Has not the Christ so rescued us, and saved us from the flood,
Of judgement from the hand of God, with hands that flowed with blood?

Great and amazing are your deeds. Let all the nations see.
O Lord Almighty, just and true, to you we bow the knee.
Track Name: Andrew Rottner - My Soul Magnifies the Lord (Luke 1:46-55)
He who is mighty, has shown great strength to me
And His mercy is for those who fear His Holy name
And He has shown strength with His arm and His law
And He has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.

He who is mighty has brought the wicked shame
And His anger is for those who curse His Holy name
And He has shown rage with the mighty in their thrones
And He has lifted the low into His glorious home

O my soul magnifies the Lord,
Yes my soul magnifies the Lord.

He who is mighty has not forgotten me
And His helping is for those to serve His Holy name
He has shown remembrance with his servant Israel
And He spoke the promise from which all my doubts dispel

O my soul magnifies the Lord,
Yes my soul magnifies the Lord.
O my soul magnifies the Lord,
Yes my soul magnifies the Lord.
Track Name: Jess Alldredge - God Will be Your Glory (Isaiah 60:1-19)
The 3rd Song of Isaiah, Isaiah 60:1-19
-
1. Arise, shine, for your light has come,
and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
Behold, darkness will cover all,
but the Lord will shed his light;
his glory will be seen.

2. Uplift your eyes around,
and see nations gather in God's name
to bring good news for all.
For those who shall oppose his name
will be stricken and brought low;
to serve in deference.

3. Redeemer, saved by the love of God;
Blessed with righteousness and peace,
You'll praise his holy name.
The sun shall be no more required,
nor the brightness of the moon.
The Lord shall be your light!

God will be your glory
Track Name: Katie Tracy and Mark Ribera - In Our Distress We Sought the Lord (Isaiah 26:9-20)
The Prayer of Isaiah, Isaiah 26:9-20
-
In our distress we sought the Lord; poured out a whispered prayer
Cried out, seeking deliverance; His mercy met us there
Empty idols have ruled over us; These hardened hearts of stone
The Lord has brought salvation, sweet; We rest in Him alone

Chorus:
Trust in the Lord forevermore
He is our fortress strong
Souls, cling to this everlasting rock
to our salvation sure

May the wicked learn your power; May they believe your truth
For your righteousness and justice; bring peace upon the earth

(Chorus)

To you who dwell in dust, awake! Rise up and sing for joy!
The Lord will redeem you at last; And life shall be restored
Track Name: Karl Digerness and Brian T. Murphy - Alas! The Lord My Life is Gone (Jonah 2:2-9)
1 Alas! the Lord my life is gone,
The Saviour hides his face;
And I am left to walk alone,
In this dark wilderness.

2 In vain I read, in vain I pray,
Or hear salvation’s word,
Unless a soul-reviving ray
Beam from the glorious Lord.

3 Yet would I trust in him that died,
For Jesus is his name;
Yet would I in his grace confide,
For he is still the same.

4 If once his grace renew the heart,
Jesus will there remain;
He cannot finally depart,
But must return again.

5 Then, dearest Lord, teach me to wait
Thy own appointed time;
O change my captive, mournful state,
And witness thou art mine.
Track Name: Brian Moss - Sing Out My Soul (Luke 1:46-55)
Who am I to receive this gift?
A child of heaven and earth
How can I give him my kiss?
I have been blessed and I give praise
To him whose song is age to age

Sing out my soul, sing out my soul
I will rejoice in you, my God, the Mighty One
Sing out my soul, sing out my soul
All glory be to you, Immanuel, the Son of Man

Kings will bow to the least of these
The humble lift - ed up
The poor are filled with good things
Mercy extends to those who fear
The Lord, our God, drawing us near

Sing out my soul, sing out my soul
I will rejoice in you, my God, the Mighty One
Sing out my soul, sing out my soul
All glory be to you, Immanuel, the Son of God

Holy is his name. Holy, holy, holy is his name.
Holy is his name. Holy, holy, holy is his name.
Holy is his name.

Sing out my soul, sing out my soul
I will rejoice in you, my God, the Mighty One
Sing out my soul, sing out my soul
All glory be to you, Immanuel, the Son
All glory be to you, Immanuel, the Son of God with us
Track Name: Caroline Cobb - Habakkuk's Prayer (Still I Will Rejoice)
The Prayer of Habakkuk, 3:2-19
-
Verse 1:
Though the fig tree should not blossom
And no fruit be on the vine
Though the fields all may fail
And the flocks we cannot find

Chorus:
Still I will rejoice
I will take joy in the Lord
The God of my salvation
He is my strength
He makes my feet like the deer
To dwell on the high places
And still I will rejoice
Track Name: Greg Scheer - The Weaver of Time (Isaiah 38:10-20)
Isaiah 38:10-20
-
1.The Weaver of Time had measured my life
in hours rather than years.
My nights grew long and my days became frayed
as the end of the thread came near.
My desperate soul took one last look to the heavens.
My final glimpse of the sky.
My final cry in the land of the living.
My finale please to the Lord of Life.
Death cannot praise you, O God of my days,
And pain only curses your name.
From this pit of despair I cry out, "Lord, raise me up!"

I will praise your name. I will praise your name.

2.Forsaken, forgotten, so far from my God.
Is silence an answer to prayer?
surrounded, insulted and scorned on all sides,
My hope had melted in fear.
But you O Lord, are the hope of your people.
My father's faith was not vain.
My mother's womb made a home for your Spirit.
Lord, in your love, give me life again.
All who descend to the dust will bow down.
All nations will bend to God's fame.
But my prayer is that of the poor one lifted up.

I will praise your name. I will praise your name.

3. (a reading from I Corinthians 15:35-58)
Death has been swallowed by life evermore.
The serpent of sin has no sting.
Dark days of despair now give way to glorious light.

I will praise your name. I will praise your name.
Track Name: Hiram Ring - Awake My Soul (Isaiah 55:6-11)
Awake my soul and sing
of Christ who died for thee!
Awake my soul and sing
of Christ the risen King!

All hail the virgins son God incarnate born.
Victory he's won, that no one more shall mourn.
Fruit of the mystic rose, as of that rose the stem,
the fount of mercy flows, the babe of bethlehem.

All hail the Son of God before the worlds began.
All those who follow on crown him the Son of man,
who every grief has known that wrings the human breast,
and bears them as his own, that all in him may rest.

All the hail the Lord of love, see now his hands and side,
those wounds still visible in beauty glorified.
No angels in the sky can fully bear that sight,
wonder at mysteries that they declared that night.

Praise to the Lord of life, who triumphed o'er the grave!
He rose victorious, for those he came to save!
His glories now we sing, who died and rose on high,
eternal life he brings, and lives that death may die.
Track Name: Jeff Bourque - Jonah's Song (Jonah 2:2-9)
Jonah 2:2-9
-
V1:
I called out unto the Lord
In the throes of my deep distress
From the depths of hell I cried
And you heard my feeble voice
For You cast me into the deep
In the heart of the raging seas
And the flood surrounded me
All Your waves passed over me

CHORUS:
With the voice of thanksgiving I
Will sacrifice to You
Ever while I am living I'll
Do what I said I'd do
For salvation belongs to You

V2:
The waters closed over me
I sank to the mountains feet
A prisoner of the earth
Where the gates lock shut forever
Then I said, "I am cast away,
But I know to Whom I pray."
When my lungs drew my last breath
You snatched me from the jaws of death

Bridge:
I won't turn my back on God's mercy
No, I won't turn my back on God's mercy
Oh, don't turn you back on God's mercy
No, don't turn you back on God's mercy
Track Name: Gregory Wilbur - Seek Ye the Lord While He May Be Found (Isaiah 55:6-11)
The 2nd Song of Isaiah, Isaiah 55:6-11
-
Seek ye the Lord while he may be found,
Call ye upon Him while He is near.
Let the wicked forsake his way,
and the unrighteous man his thoughts:

And let him return unto the Lord,
and He will have mercy upon him;
and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.

For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are Your ways my ways, saith the Lord.
As the heavens are higher than the earth,
My ways and thoughts are higher than yours.

And let him return unto the Lord,
and He will have mercy upon him;
and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.

For as the rain cometh down, and snow from heaven,
And maketh it bring forth and bud that it may give seed to sow,
that it may give bread to eat.

So shall My world be that goeth forth out of my mouth:
It shall not return unto me void,
but it shall accomplish that which I please it shall prosper
in the thing whereunto I sent it.
Track Name: Bruce Benedict - Simeon's Song (Luke 2:29-33)
Lord bid your servant go in peace
Your word is now fulfilled
These eyes have seen salvation’s dawn,
This child so long foretold

This is the Savior of the world,
The Gentiles promised light
God’s glory dwelling in our midst,
The joy of Israel

Behold this child will pierce your heart
His Word will be a sword
A sign opposed to hearts concealed
And grace for heaven’s adored

Almighty Father, hear our cry
Through Christ the only Son,
Whom in the Spirit we adore
For ages without end
Track Name: Peter La Grand - You Alone are Holy (Revelation 15:3-4)
You alone are holy
You alone are holy
Great and marvelous are your deeds
For you alone are holy

Who will not fear you O Lord?
And bring glory to your name
Just and true are you ways
King of the ages

All nations will come and worship you
For you alone are holy

All your righteous ways have been seen
For you alone are holy
Track Name: Brady Toops - Song of Moses and the Lamb (Revelation 15:3-4)
Verse 1:
I heard a sound from heaven roar
Like mighty ocean waves against the shore
The Son of Man was seated on the throne
Calling forth the bride as His own

Then I looked upon the glassy sea
With fire and those who believed
Holding harps that God had given them
Singing the song of Moses and the Lamb

Chorus:
Great and marvelous are your works O God
Just and true are all of your ways
Who won’t fear your name and glorify
For You are great and greatly to be praised

Verse 2:
Every nation, tribe, and people bless
Wearing the robes of righteousness
All the angels and elders gather ‘round
Falling with their faces to the ground
